World news – CA – Phillies injuries: Jean Segura hurt, J.T. Realmuto won’t play this weekend

More bad injury news for Phillies as the hits keep coming originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia

Infielder Jean Segura was hit in the left triceps by a 97 mph fastball from New York Mets right-hander Jeurys Familia in Thursday’s night’s 10-6 loss.

The Phils blew a 6-3 lead en route to their latest worst loss of the season.

After the bitter defeat, manager Joe Girardi said he would be « surprised » if Segura would be able to play in Friday’s doubleheader against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Girardi went on to drop some more bad news, saying that All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto would not be ready to play this weekend. Earlier in the week, Girardi said the team had been targeting the weekend for Realmuto’s return.

Realmuto has not played since Saturday when he suffered an injury to his left hip/quad area. Realmuto did some light running before Thursday’s game and has not progressed as quickly as the team had hoped.

If Realmuto can return Monday, the Phils would have just seven games left. Who knows where they’ll be in the standings by then? They have lost eight of their last 11 games to fall a game under .500. They currently hold the eighth and final NL playoff spot, but their lead over ninth-place St. Louis is just a half-game.

Segura’s injury left the Phils with just four healthy infielders. They could get Jay Bruce back off the injured list Friday and use him at first base. That would allow them to use Phil Gosselin as an extra infielder.

First baseman Rhys Hoskins is on the injured list with an elbow injury that has put the rest of his season in jeopardy. The Phils have also lost pitcher Jake Arrieta for the season and another pitcher, Spencer Howard, could be out for the remainder of the season. All of these injuries have occurred in the last week as the Phillies’ playoff chances have plummeted.
