The Isle of Armor DLC for Pokemon Sword and Shield arrived in June, but there is still an expansion on the way for Switch Pokemon games this year The Crown Tundra, Part 2 of the Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, set to launch today, October 22, and it features another new area to explore, a bunch of new and returning Pokémon to catch, and more
Like Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra is an important piece of complementary content that includes its own storyline, its own cast of characters and Pokedex to complete, as well as new game modes, items, and other additions For You To help familiarize yourself with the DLC, we’ve put together everything you need to know about the Sword and Shield’s Crown Tundra expansion below
The Crown Tundra launches on October 22 The Pokemon company has not announced what time the DLC will go live; However, the Pokemon Home service is down for maintenance as it receives its own corresponding update at 11 p.m. UTC (4 p.m. PT / 7 p.m. ET). The Crown Tundra is included in the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass alongside the games’ previous DLC, The Isle of Armor Expansion Pass costs $ 30 / £ 27 Expansions cannot be purchased individually and each version of the game requires its own corresponding Expansion Pass to access the DLC
If you haven’t purchased the base games or the DLC yet, Nintendo will be releasing new Pokemon Sword and Shield editions on November 6 which will be included in their respective Expansion Passes.
Players who purchase a Sword Expansion Pass or Shield Expansion Pass will receive a few bonus clothing items for their in-game character: an exclusive Pikachu Uniform and an Eevee Uniform Those who choose the one of the newly announced expansion packs will additionally receive an additional 100 Poke Balls
Much like the Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra introduces a variety of ancient Pokémon in the Pokedex Gen 8 These monsters are added as free updates, so you don’t need to own the Pass extension to get them; you will be able to receive the Pokémon via exchanges or import them via Pokemon Home even if you do not collect the DLC However, the Returning Pokémon can only be encountered in the wild if you have the Expansion Pass
In total, over 200 ancient monsters in total are added between the two expansions, including all Legendary Pokémon from previous games You can see all returning Pokémon in each expansion below
In addition to returning monsters, developer Game Freak introduces new Pokémon to Sword and Shield with every expansion We got a glimpse of a handful of new monsters coming to The Crown Tundra, including the legendary flagship of the DLC, Calyrex – a Psychic / Grass Pokémon that would have ruled the Galar region in Antiquity
Calyrex isn’t the only new Legendary coming to The Crown Tundra; The expansion will also introduce Galarian forms of Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres Galarian Articuno is a Psychic / Flying type that can freeze opponents with a new Psychic type move called Freezing Glare Galarian Zapdos is a fight / flight type capable of learn a new attack called Thunderous Kick Finally, Galarian Moltres is a Dark / Flying type who can unleash an attack called Fiery Wrath
At least two new Regis are also introduced in The Crown Tundra The first is Regieleki, an electric-type legendary His signature attack is called Thunder Cage Movement traps opponents, dealing damage each turn and preventing them from change position The Dragon-type Regidrago debuts alongside him He has a unique ability called Dragon’s Maw, and his signature attack, Dragon Energy, deals greater damage plus Regidrago has HP
In addition to the new Legendaries, The Crown Tundra also introduces another new regional variant: Galarian Slowking It is not yet clear how he evolves, but like Galarian Slowbro, he is a Psychic / Poison type He also has a unique ability. called Curious Medicine, which resets a Pokémon ally’s stats when Galarian Slowking enters the field
A handful of new features and items are coming as part of the Crown Tundra expansion, including a new co-op mode called Dynamax Adventures, in which you and up to three other players can explore Pokémon dens together. You can read more about some of the new features and items announced below
One of The Crown Tundra’s new flagship features is Dynamax Adventures, a co-op mode in which a team of four trainers set out to explore the dens of Max Raid Each player will choose a rental team of Pokémon to bring with them Before Expedition Begins As the team dives deeper into the lair, you’ll need to choose which branching paths to take and battle any Dynamax Pokémon you encounter along the way
Once you’ve reached a certain point in The Crown Tundra’s story, you’ll be able to enter the Galarian Star Tournament, a new 2v2 competition featuring all of the Gym Leaders and other major NPCs from the main game and extensions You will choose an AI partner when you enter the tournament and face a series of other teams in multiple two-on-two battles
One of the most exciting new items introduced in The Crown Tundra is the Ability Patch, which allows you to change a Pokémon’s ability to its hidden ability Given how rare it is to find a Pokemon with its hidden ability, this is a very useful addition to the series, but The Pokemon Company teases that the ability patch will be « hard to find »
