CHARLOTTETOWN – The ruling Progressive Conservatives of Prince Edward Island won a crucial by-election that will turn their minority government into a narrow majority
With the election of Zack Bell in the Charlottetown-Winsloe district, the Conservatives will now have 14 seats compared to the combined 13 held by the opposition parties
Prime Minister Dennis King has said his government will continue to take a collaborative approach if the Conservatives form a majority
At the time of Monday’s vote, the Tories had 13 seats while the Greens under Peter Bevan-Baker had eight and the Liberals under Acting Leader Sonny Gallant had five
In the 2019 general election, the Conservative candidate for Charlottetown-Winsloe finished third behind the Green candidate and winning Liberal Robert Mitchell, who resigned last month after representing the riding for 13 years
Bell won just over 49% of the vote against 27% for Green Party candidate Chris van Ouwerkerk, 22% for Liberal Zac Murphy and 1% for New Democrat Lynne Thiele
Almost 40% of registered voters voted in three days of advance polls for the by-election, and a further 5% voted by mail
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, voters have been asked to wear a mask when voting and to comply with physical distance and capacity limit protocols
Each polling station featured election officials wearing personal protective equipment, protective plastic barriers and hand sanitizing stations
In addition, voters were asked to show their ID without handing it over to election officials, and each voter was to receive a new pencil with their ballot
