In Manderley, the second Mrs de Winter realizes that she may be over her head as the head housekeeper, Mrs Danvers, tries to make her life a living hell Mrs Danvers directs the second Mrs. de Winter to believe that Maxim is still in love with his first wife, Rebecca, and under the guise of helping, she attempts to sabotage their relationship Eventually, the second Mrs. de Winter reaches a breaking point and while she about to commit suicide, at the request of Ms Danvers, Rebecca’s body is found Maxim is accused of having killed her, as he had previously wrongly identified another body as Rebecca, and it is up to the second Ms de Winter to find the truth Image source: Netflix

Maxim never talks about Rebecca, and during their courtship display, the second Mrs. de Winter does not know how Rebecca died and does not bring up the subject with her future husband shortly after arriving in Manderley, during a walk along the beach, second Mrs. de Winter discovers a cabin and learns that Rebecca has died of drowning However, this is not the full story After the disastrous events of the costume ball, Rebecca’s body is found with her ship sunk and there are rumors that her death was the result of a criminal act

The second Mrs. de Winter then finds Maxim alone in the cabin and he reveals to her that he actually hated Rebecca and her cruelty, and that he shot and killed her after she pressured him to do so. He is then arrested and the second Mrs. de Winter searches for the doctor that Rebecca saw before her death to see if there is more to the story as police believe Rebecca was pregnant and Maxim has it. killed because she was unfaithful, in reality she was dying of cancer and had only a few weeks to live She had Maxim killed so that she would not suffer any more, but did not let him know this because of his cruelty

Mrs. Danvers came to Manderley with Rebecca and is absolutely obsessed with her Even after Rebecca’s death she keeps things the way Rebecca would have wanted them When the second Mrs. de Winter intrudes on Rebecca’s memory, she gives herself to mission to make the woman’s life a living hell The discovery of Rebecca’s body causes Mrs Danvers to do what she can to bring Maxim down, because Rebecca is the only person she has ever truly loved She doesn’t understand why Rebecca has reportedly kept the nature of her doctor’s visit a secret and it’s slowly starting to destroy her The last straw for Mrs Danvers is the news that Maxim is set free She sets Manderley on fire with the staff still inside and walks to the cabin of Rebecca The second Mrs. de Winter catches up to her and tries to reason with her, but Mrs. Danvers has had enough and jumps off the cliff to be with Rebecca in death

Although Manderley burns to the ground, Maxim and the second Mrs. de Winter technically have a happy ending.The second Mrs. de Winter helps clear Maxim’s name with the discovery of Rebecca’s medical record, choosing to tell the doctor that Rebecca decided to drown rather than admit Maxim’s true role in his death Seeing Manderley burn to the ground, they do what they can to save the staff members who are still spinning in the field The film ends where it begins, with the second Mrs. de Winter waking up from a nightmare saying, “Last night I dreamed I went back to Manderley.” The couple decide to travel the world in search of of a new home, now that they are free from Rebecca and able to be truly together
