GODERICH, ONT –
From Tobermory to Sarnia, strong winds and high waves ravaged the shores of Lake Huron on Sunday night
« It was the biggest storm we have seen in our history, overtaking the storm of 1986, » says Goderich Mayor John Grace
The highest water level on record was recorded at Goderich Pier on Sunday evening, exceeding the previous high water mark of 1986
And although Cove Road was completely submerged overnight and there was some damage along the Goderich shoreline, the recently installed shoreline protection largely did its job.
« We were waiting for this test We not only had a good test, we had a great test, and I think we passed it, » says Grace
Bayfield lost part of its public parking lot on the beach to waves as StJoseph, north of Grand Bend, had piles of debris washed ashore
At Point Clark, the breakwater was tested by monstrous waves and at Kincardine, the storm surge actually displaced part of the shore promenade
“There will be more fall storms to come The combination of high winds and high water levels will create potential for flooding in low-lying coastal areas and cliff erosion problems,” says Jayne Thompson of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority
« We are asking people living at the top of the bluff to watch for signs of bluff failure Look for things like parallel cracks at the top of the cliff, and if you see this kind of sign of erosion, notify your municipality or board. nature conservation «
Grace says that, overall, many riverside communities and landowners consider themselves lucky because the storm surge could have been much worse.
