Shell announced the closure of its Convent refinery in Louisiana

CONVENT, La (WVUE) – Shell announces the closure of its Convent refinery in Louisiana This move is part of the company’s global strategy to invest in a set of uniquely integrated manufacturing sites who are also strategically positioned for the transition to a low carbon future The shutdown process will begin mid-November

In July 2020, we informed staff that the Shell Convent refinery was marketed Despite efforts to sell the asset, a viable buyer was never identified After reviewing all aspects of our business, including the financial performance, we made the difficult decision to close the site

Shell will ensure a safe and responsible refinery shutdown with a focus on those most directly affected This includes supporting Convent employees during this difficult time by helping them apply for other opportunities within company, or in the transition to a future outside Shell Shell will open a selective voluntary departure program at its Geismar and Norco facilities, subject to negotiations for employees represented by unions, to potentially create additional roles where Convent employees can be placed

We will maintain a significant presence in Louisiana through our integrated refining and chemicals sites at Norco and Geismar, our midstream infrastructure assets, our branded retail presence, our Gulf of Mexico operations and our offices in New Orleans

Once the shutdown process is complete, we will continue to market the Convent refinery for divestiture

Shell announced in September that its chemistry and manufacturing activities will integrate to create an end-to-end organization for chemicals and products This new organization will be reflected in six energy and chemical parks that will enable us to put implementing the growth strategy of our Chemicals business and adapting our refining footprint to provide customers with the low carbon products they want A key benefit of these key sites will also come from deeper integration with Shell’s business hubs and producing more chemicals and other resilient products in a low-carbon future.

Shell’s remaining refinery sites include; Rheinland (Germany), Pernis (NL), Palau Bukom (Sinapore), Scotford (Canada), Norco (United States) and Deer Park (United States)

Currently we operate 11 refineries (excluding Tabangao Philippines – terminal conversion), and have interests in 3 others (a total of 14) ◦ Less 5 refineries that were / are marketed; Frederica (Denmark), Puget Sound (United States), Mobile (United States), Convent (United States), Sarnia (Canada) ◦ Minus 3 non-operating JV refineries; SAPREF (South African Petroleum Refineries PTY LTD) (Durban South Africa), Miro (Germany) and PCK (Schwedt, Germany)
