World News – CA – Snow « One-Two Punch » in Saskatoon Due to Colorado Depression

More than 50cm of snow could fall in Saskatoon this weekend as a Colorado low crosses Saskatchewan

A « one-two punch » of snow hits Saskatoon this weekend, says Global News meteorologist Peter Quinlan

A Colorado low is expected to cross Saskatchewan with snow beginning Saturday morning before easing Monday

« Usually our systems are mowers from Alberta They are very fast systems, which is why we don’t see a ton of moisture with them, » Quinlan said

« This (Colorado depression) is filled with precipitation and we’re actually going to see the Pacific humidity associated with a different disturbance combining with this to create a pile of snow «

« We’ll see 10-20cm on Saturday We’re not done yet, » Quinlan said

« We’re going to see another 10-20 shot maybe even 30cm early on Monday »

Pamela Goulden-McLeod, director of the Saskatoon emergency management organization, said it could hamper the safe movement of people in the city this weekend

« For this reason, we all need to prepare for the possibility that we have to stay home for a few days and plan accordingly, » Goulden-McLeod said

The city of Saskatoon said preparations are underway to allow crews to weather a severe winter storm

« We’re going to have up to 200 workers to clean up the city, and that’s pretty important, » said Terry Schmidt, city manager of transportation and construction.

« If the snow is as bad as expected, it is possible that the streets are covered with snow or ice between the passages of our equipment. Drivers will have to be very careful and even stay away from the streets if they can «

City officials said crews will clear heavily trafficked roads such as Circle Drive and 8th Street during the storm and ensure access to hospitals, fire stations and police headquarters is maintained

Quinlan expects snow warnings to be issued and that there is a risk of a blizzard warning

« We’re going to have reduced visibility, we’re going to have gusty winds up to 60 km / h as the snow falls, » Quinlan said

« So we might see a blizzard warning if we have four consecutive hours of visibility of 400 meters or less, especially on Sunday »
