World News – CA – ‘This Is Us’: Milo Ventimiglia and Chrissy Metz talk about season 5

'There's a lot to unbox,' Ventimiglia tells ET of the new season, which tackles pandemic, racial strife and family conflict

The Pearsons will have a lot to face in Season 5 of This Is Us

NBC’s family drama kicks off its new season on Tuesday with family, like many across America, trying to overcome the uncertainty and emotional weight of the coronavirus pandemic and race conflict as the Big Three get together. preparing to celebrate their 40 years Combined with the aftermath of Kevin and Randall’s big fight, Rebecca’s rapidly deteriorating mental state, Kevin’s impending fatherhood, and Kate and Toby’s adoption plans, something has to give

“There’s a lot to unbox,” Ventimiglia told ET’s Nischelle Turner of the two-hour premiere, “A lot has happened since March: racial injustice and COVID and quarantine [Creator] Dan [Fogelman] and the writers really made this the best version of how the Pearsons tell stories and approach personal things while looking at the big picture The writers did a terrific job of fixing it all, from the corona [virus] to Black Lives Matter, to racial injustice These are things, as responsible artists, current writers and actors have done such a great job of tackling those things that really weigh on people in this moment »

While Jack does not provide testimony on how the family deals with the current conflicts that take center stage, Ventimiglia noted that the conversation about race and identity runs deep into the Pearsons’ DNA – since they adopted Randall into the family

« It’s something on Jack’s mind, on Jack’s heart from the moment he looked at Randall and fell in love with his son. He also treated him in a different way than when we’re in it right now, right now But yeah, it’s absolutely something that has been part of the family’s conversations for years, years and years,  » the 43-year-old actor said, adding that those early conversations of Randall’s training years as a child could « eventually » play out in flashbacks « I think it might The past always informs the present and the present always reflects the past and looks back It’s probably the goal of never being too harsh with the storytelling that we do But I absolutely think it all has been reflected over the past four seasons, but it wouldn’t surprise me if we don’t see more of that moving forward this season »

One of the biggest unresolved conflicts is Kevin and Randall’s fractured relationship following their explosion in the Season 4 finale, when they both brutally expressed their unfiltered feelings for each other. As the patriarch of the family, Ventimiglia admitted that seeing the brothers at odds like this was excruciatingly difficult but offered hope that they could one day mend the fences. The impact, however, will reverberate throughout the Pearson Clan to varying degrees for now.

« We’re going to reunite the boys because it’s a little heartbreaking It was painful It reminded me of the end of season 1 when Jack and Rebecca had this big argument This one felt absolutely the same », Said Ventimiglia « But these two men had a tough upbringing and it wasn’t until a little more recent that we found them finding common ground and really reuniting as a family This is going to be hard to get back, but I think, hopefully, that’s the point, to put the Pearson brothers back together «

« You think of the big three, you have Kate in the middle of it all And that’s a tough thing I think it’s a tough thing for kids who were raised a certain way and now it is as if what they had to do while growing up is now very reflected and reflected in the state of the world, ”he continued. »It creates a lot of things for the whole family to deal with It’s not just the boys who are alone with it, you know? By extension it’s Beth, Randall’s wife By extension it’s Toby, Randall’s husband Kate It’s mom, it’s Miguel, it’s everyone and everything «

Chrissy Metz offered a glimpse of how Kevin’s surprise of welcoming twins with Madison, one of Kate’s closest friends, affects his character and the rest of the family As the trailer indicates, Kate isn’t exactly taking Kevin’s news (and the impulsive engagement of the moment)

« At first I was like ‘Ahh!’ The only friend Kate has and he’s going to do that? I thought, ‘This is gonna be good for him,’ « Metz, 40, said with ET » Sometimes he needs something to start it and he works always on his sobriety because sobriety is always something that you work towards and it’s one thing at a time But I think something bigger and more important that he can come out of his head will be really good for him So I’m happy with it now At first, I said to myself: « Uh huh! » But now I’m really excited about it «

But this will likely affect Kate’s relationship with Kevin more than her friendship with Madison As Metz explains, Kate’s bond with Kevin is close « because they’re twins and literally shared a belly together. – not that Madison isn’t a great friend – but I think it’s one of those things that you can get mad at as a family and know they love you and you still love them But you think to yourself: « What the hell? I don’t think Kate is going to take a side but I think she’s honestly happy for Madison because it’s also a good thing for Madison I think a child chooses the parent »

And then there’s Kate and Toby’s decision to expand their family through adoption As the future flash-forward has revealed their adopted daughter, Hailey, as adults, the pandemic will force the couple to review family planning – for now

« They say to themselves, ‘What challenges can we have? Can we have more? « she said » It’ll make them wonder if it’s the right time, the right decision right now, but it also shows everyone who watches this show that you are still living your best life. of your abilities It’s the hope that they will keep moving forward because they really want it so desperately Sometimes it doesn’t sound like what you want but you have to keep going and I think that will make a lot of people hope «

As for the mysterious whereabouts of Kate in the future, Metz has remained a mom There have been theories circulating that Kate might not be alive in the flash-forward, as she is the only member of the Big Three not having made an appearance

“I’m not sure if we’ll find out this season or at least not at the start of the season where Sister Kate is, but I’m just saying, don’t worry,” Metz said “She might be in a pressing, all of you I’m just saying! «
