Tristan Thompson has agreed to a deal with the Boston Celtics, his agent told Yahoo Sports.
Thompson leaves the Cavaliers after an eight-season run with Cleveland that put him fourth overall in 2011. He endured ups and downs with the Cavs, earning a title with LeBron James & Co.. in 2016, just to be part of 38 combined victories with the team in the two years since James moved to Los Angeles.
Whether he would stay in Cleveland became a question when the Cavs acquired great colleague Andre Drummond at close of trading in February. The two only played five games together due to the shortened season related to COVID-19, and while Drummond has a player option for the upcoming season, the question was whether the Cavs wanted to keep both players.
Thompson has produced for Cleveland and has averaged double-doubles for the past two seasons after never having done it in his career. And last season he averaged a career high of 12. 0 points per game while showing a deep shooting range (9 of 23 from the 3 point line) for the first time in his career.
But it also only shot 51% on 2-pointers, its lowest level since 2013-14, while its 1st. 8 sales per game were a career high.
