MANILA, Philippines – State seismologists warned Friday evening that heavy rains brought by Typhoon Rolly could cause volcanic sediment flows or lahars and mud runoff from three volcanoes in Luzon to flow into rivers and nearby drainage areas
For this reason, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology urged « increased vigilance and preparedness of communities » near Mayon, Pinatubo and Taal volcanoes for lahar and associated risks
According to Phivolcs, the following channels in the province of Albay could be affected by lahars and sediment-laden currents:
Meanwhile, the agency said that « Pinatubo lahars are likely confined to the canal and occur on the upper and middle part of the Sto River Systems Tomas-Marella and Bucao, but may progress to courses of muddy water and flooding on the lower reaches «
State seismologists have said the following municipalities in Zambales could be affected by lahars from the Pinatubo volcano:
« Muddy currents can also be generated along the O’Donnell and Pasig-Potrero river systems draining the Pinatubo edifice to the north and southeast respectively and affect communities downstream of the provinces of Tarlac and Pampanga » , added the agency
The intense rains from « Rolly » can also generate muddy currents and muddy runoff around the Taal volcano, Phivolcs said, affecting the following municipalities of Batangas:
« DOST-PHIVOLCS urges communities and local governments in the risk areas identified above to continuously monitor typhoon conditions and take preventive response measures for their safety against ‘ROLLY' »
The state’s meteorological office warned on Saturday morning that « Rolly », the most severe storm of the year to date, could turn into a super typhoon within the next 12 hoursA storm is classified as a super typhoon as soon as its winds reach 220 kilometers per hour
