Saturday’s UFC Vegas 17 card was the final UFC event of the year. It was also an opportunity for Gillian Robertson and Taila Santos to finally get back to work after both flyweight fighters dropped out earlier this month.
For Robertson, the move from Andrea « KGB » Lee to Santos probably had more disadvantages. Instead of a fighter standing directly above her, she was now faced with an unranked fighter who wanted to make a name for herself. Santos, meanwhile, had an opportunity to get into the top 15 if it came out with a raised hand.
Someone would get an early Christmas present on Saturday. Who is better prepared for the change of the opponent, to be honest. It turned out that it was the Brazilian Santos, who held a strong top position and was repeatedly able to fend off Robertson’s attempts at filing.
Santos pegged things up early in the opening round, but Robertson chased an arm bar for the first minute and basically jumped in. In an awkward position, Robertson let go of the attempt, but threatened another a moment later. Santos was working in front of the station, but Robertson landed more elbows from below than Santos from above. Santos landed a little more at the end of the round and, thanks to her best time, would likely win the round on the scorecards.
The first round was essentially a template for things to come. It wasn’t long before Robertson was on his back again in the second. Robertson followed the arm bar once more. Santos, however, pressed her knee into Robertson’s face, forcing the Canadian to break the grip. Santos then caught Robertson in a triangle, although Robertson – perhaps bloody from the knee that pressed against her face – landed on top. She was too high against her opponent, however, and Robertson landed on the floor and again unsuccessfully pursued an arm bar.
Robertson jumped into a guillotine at the beginning of the third round. And when she couldn’t finish it, she was back on her back with Taila Santos on top. Robertson arguably had her best chance at armbar assist late in the round, but Santos pulled free and ended up in side control.
In the end, it was a unanimous win for Santos, with Robertson only completing one round on a scorecard.
