It was a Halloween tradition in Vancouver, but its days are numbered – and it’s a relief for many residents who are fed up with hearing fireworks at all times of the day and night. p>

Until now, licensed retailers in the city were allowed to sell fireworks in the week leading up to Halloween

Since 2007, people who buy them are required to have a permit issued by the city and to comply with certain rules, including that the fireworks are only lit on Oct. 31 and only on private property

Earlier this year, city council voted to ban the sale and use of fireworks from November 1

The move was strongly endorsed by the Vancouver Fire Rescue Service, which estimates that fireworks bring in an average of $ 300,000 to $ 400,000 annually in the city.

« We literally cannot allow something that we know will cause fire damage and injury every year, » said VFRS spokesperson Capt Jonathan Gormick

In October 2015, a stray shot from a Roman candle landed on the porch of a century-old house on Woodland Drive in East Vancouver, causing a fire that destroyed the house and nearly killed a man

« My brother was trapped upstairs, » said owner Patricia Mitchell « The fire department said one more minute and he would be gone The two cats did not survive They perished in the fire »

Fireworks retailers strongly oppose Vancouver’s ban on amateur pyrotechnics, saying they are being punished for the actions of people who choose not to follow the rules

« We should not be held responsible for misuse, » said Ashley Marsh, manager of Phatboy Fireworks « We are doing our best to always be on the right side of the law and meet the City of Vancouver’s operating standard. »

Anyone caught selling, using or even owning fireworks in Vancouver from November 1 could be fined up to $ 1,000

Come November 1, anyone caught selling, using or even owning fireworks in the city of Vancouver could face a fine
