Milwaukee – Nov. . 30, 2020 – 1. December is Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving that celebrates generosity and community impact. Instead of donating money, Versiti Blood Centers is asking community members to make a commitment to donate blood.

« The need for blood never ends and is a critical need, » says Dr. . Dan Waxman, vice president of transfusion medicine and senior physician at Versiti. “More than ever, Versiti Blood Centers need people to stand up for their community and save a life by donating blood. In a year like 2020 when so much is beyond our control, the selfless act of donating blood is a free life saving gift for you. ”

Every two seconds someone needs life-saving blood to survive. While medical technology has made many life-saving discoveries over the years, there is still no substitute for blood, making it essential for hospitals every day of the year.

A blood donation takes less than an hour and can save up to three lives. Although blood is typically used by a patient within 24 to 48 hours of donation, it can be safely stored for 42 days before it is needed.

Due to COVID-19, safety precautions are in place, including social distancing and mandatory masks. COVID-19 antibody tests are performed on all donations as part of Versiti’s standard tests. The test will let the donor know if they have antibodies that reflect a previous COVID-19 infection.
