It didn’t take long for Daryl Morey to make his mark on the Philadelphia 76ers. A few weeks after being named the team’s new chief of basketball operations, Morrie made his first move, and it was a big step. Ahead of the release of the NBA 2020 draft Wednesday night, the Sixers agreed to trade veteran senior man Al Horford, along with protected first-round selection for 2025, overall selection number 34 in draft 20 (French goalkeeper Theo Maledon), and Serbian goalkeeper Vasiligi Mikic’s rights to Oklahoma City Thunder vs. veteran goalkeeper Danny Green and Terence Ferguson.

The fact that Morrie’s first step with The Sixers was to trade Horford was appropriate, if not ludicrous, given that a large part of the reason Morrie brought Morrie to Philadelphia in the first place was cleaning up the mess that was the front of the organization The Office did its last off-season. There must be ample opportunities in Philadelphia for Green to do what he does best: drop shots from the outside.

Landing Green was only part of the reason this trade was so good for Philadelphia. It also allowed them to exit Horford’s contract without having to relinquish too many assets. Horford’s trial in Philadelphia was unsuccessful, and that was evident to anyone who watched the team last season. He wasn’t fit well alongside Embiid and Simons, and in return, he struggled to find ways to make a positive impact..

The main problem was that the Horford skill set at the offensive end was redundant with Embiade and Simons.. The Horford is at its best when operating either from the elbow or from low mass. He is very comfortable to dress himself and others from these areas. The problem was that Embiid and Simmons are also more comfortable in those areas, especially in lower mass, where Embiid does a fair share of damage inflicted on it, and where Simmons are often landed as a result of their inability to clear the ground with fire. Thus, Horford was forced to spend much of his time with the Sixers on the ocean, where he was limited and not particularly effective.. He’s probably still a very productive player in the league, but that won’t happen with the Sixers.

By dumping Horford’s contract, the Sixers have opened nearly $ 10 million in cover space this off-season, and more than $ 50 million in space to move forward after next season, as Green is hired to unrestricted free agency in 2021.. If all goes well, Sixers can look to bring it back at that point. If not, they could sever ties and spend money elsewhere. Either way, they would be devoid of the albatross that was Horford’s knot. With this move, they regained much of the future financial flexibility that they lost in the latest season.

Morey wasn’t executed there though. With the draft getting started, he took another step. This time he sent Josh Richardson and the 36th picker in the draft (University of Colorado striker Tyler Bay) to the Dallas Mavericks for Seth Curry.. Like Green, Curry’s projects fit well on Embiid and Simmons. He is a shooter, and he holds the second-highest 3-point shot percentage in NBA history (44. 3 percent). Richardson is a better defender than Carrie, but between Simmons, Greene and Mattis Theboul, the Sixers must have had enough elsewhere to make up for it..

Then there were the draft options. In the first round, Sixers chose Tyrese Maxey of Kentucky – an explosive sports keeper able to play both on and off the ball – the skill set that the Sixers had consistently needed since the Simmons’ career began. In the second round they landed Arkansas shooting guard Isaiah Joe and DePaul striker Paul Reed, who’s cool about the rim:

Rumors persist, but the Sixers continue to insist their plan is to keep building around Embiid and Simmons.. Elton Brand said that. As did Doc Rivers. Morey reinforced that point after the draft on Wednesday evening, stressing the fact that the team was taking steps to complement the All-Star Duo. .

« We have two young stars in their prime, and you want to put men around them who can build with them, » Morrie said on a conference call with members of the media.. . « . . . Joel and Ben will be here for a long time.

At this point, next season’s Team Sixers roster is still a far cry from the final product, so it’s hard to pinpoint exactly where Green, Curry, and Rookies will land in the rotation. But on paper, they all plan to cater to the Sixers who finally seem to have a clear direction.. Surrounding Embiid and Simmons with firing is what the Sixers should have been doing all along, and it looks like that’s finally what they’re doing under Morrie’s direction..
