PORT DOVER, Ont. – Local and regional officials have invited bikers to sit down on the traditional Friday, the thirteenth pilgrimage to Port Dover, Ont.. . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Hordes of bikers usually descend on the beach town every Friday on Friday the 13th, with more than 100,000 people regularly reported to county police.
The mayor of Norfolk County, where Port Dover is located, said she knew motorcycle racing was important to society, but that going ahead would put the area at risk.
Kristal Chopp says if people don’t sit outside the event, this could lead to a spike in cases that will force the county to impose more restrictions on public health in the area.
The Thirteenth Gathering on Friday is not an official event, so the boycott is unable to « cancel » it, but officials note that they have taken steps to discourage attendance, such as refusing to grant permits to vendors.
Prime Minister Doug Ford said he understood thousands of people were looking forward to the rally, but this year, that wasn’t possible..
“People, we cannot meet now with thousands of people,” he said Thursday. “It’s just a method, a very risky method.
County Police has also sent a reminder about the county’s current public health restrictions.
They say the area is currently classified as a « yellow » area by the district, so anyone who « should » attend the assembly should be familiar with the rules.
“Please make sure you always wear the mask, sanitize your hands and remember that if you are outside, there will be no more than 25 people in the group,” police said. “If you are inside, that means there are no more than 10 people at any one time.
