The mayor of a town in Manitoulin Island, Ontario, said the community is reeling after a shooting that killed a police officer and a civilian on Thursday.
Dan Osborne, the mayor of Gore Bay, says news of the accident spread quickly across the small island community yesterday.
He says it’s the kind of place where everyone knows everyone, and loss is « devastating.
The Ontario Police Watch said yesterday that it is investigating the shooting, which occurred after the officer was summoned to a property in Gore Bay.
The SIU said the call related to an « unwanted man » at the property.
She said the officer, identified as Const. Mark Hofinge, was shot dead after arriving, while the man died on the property in hospital.
