WORLD NEWS – CALIFORNIA – The second winter’s blast hits Saskatoon, 30-50 cm of potential snow

Saskatoon officials say unnecessary travel should be avoided as a second winter blast hits the city

Here’s the advice from City of Saskatoon officials when a second winter blast hits the city

Pamela Golden McLeod, director of the city’s Emergency Management Organization, said unnecessary travel should be avoided and people should take steps to ensure their safety during the storm.

Pamela Golden McLeod, director of the city’s Emergency Management Organization, said: « Today it’s not about running out of things and storing things as much as it is about staying. »

If people ventured out and ran into trouble, they were asked to wait for help

City officials said that if drivers are stranded, don’t panic and stay in their car and call 306-975-8300 – or 911 if it’s an emergency.

The Saskatoon Fire Department said responders will be wearing military uniform and clearly identifiable and will bring stranded personnel to a safe location

Terry Lang of Environment Canada said it has snowfall of 10 to 15 cm on Saturday and more will come on Sunday.

Lang said that the snowfall will diminish overnight, but added that it is still unclear how much it might fall.

“In addition to the 10 to 15 cm the city has received, we will likely be in a neighborhood of 20 to 30 cm more on top of that”

The crews were outside all night on Saturday through Sunday morning clearing Circle Drive and the sandy streets, and freezing rain and stormy snow also left the streets in a slippery mess

Göran Sarik, the city’s director of roads, fleet and support, said the current focus is on maintaining mobility on priority streets and sidewalks through a number of measures including sanding, salting and grading.

“We put everything we have in this storm today, tonight, tomorrow, and in the coming days,” Sarik said.

“Once the high priority streets are cleared, we will navigate through the rest of the system, and sometimes we will return to the highest priority roads several times to preserve mobility”

There is a possibility that the vote in the municipal elections on November 9 could be affected by the storm, but it will continue

City Director Geoff Jorgenson said, « The city will do all it can to keep roads clear and allow access to polling stations. »

« You can see how this affects voter turnout, but I can commit that the city will do everything we can to keep roads open. »

This storm is compared to January 10, 2007, a snowstorm that threw a one-day record of 36 cm of snow on the city

That storm brought the city to a standstill, shutting down public services, transportation, the airport and all highways in and out of the city

“I remember driving the next morning and it was almost after the end of the world,” said Alison Edwards, a Saskatoon Police spokesperson, on the tenth anniversary of the blizzard in 2007, “There were abandoned vehicles everywhere and no one could be seen.”

The bleaching conditions lasted for nine hours and the snowfall as high as the cars forced some people to spend the night at work instead of bearing the wheel at home

Saskatoon remains under warning of a winter storm on Sunday afternoon, with a possibility of 30 to 50 cm of snowfall by Monday
