IMSA SportsCar Championship title winner Dane Cameron predicts the Daytona 24 Hours series opener this weekend will be « wild ».

The Meyer Shank Racing Acura driver, who will compete in 2019 with Juan Pablo Montoya and Penske who won the title believes the increased number of cars this year and the addition of the LMP3 class to the grid will result in more yellow flag safety car periods will change the dynamics of the race / p> « It will feel different this year, » said Cameron, who joined the Shank team after Penske’s involvement in the Acura Daytona Prototype international program ended.

« Most of the cars are that we’ve had a long time here, a new category, new teams, new cars and new drivers for this event.

« Last year especially, the pace was crazy with so few cars all day with big green flags.

« I think this [this year’s race] is going to be pretty white it will be far from that – it will have more of a feeling of survival. «

The 49 cars on the grid mean an increase from 11 cars to the 38 that started the 24 hours last season. It’s the largest grid line-up at Daytona since 2018, when 50 cars started.

LMP3, which debuts in the IMSA Main Series this weekend, will provide seven of the cars in the race.

Daytona was named in the course of the Interrupted 24 hours last year by only six safety cars and the 2018 event by only four.

The 2019 edition, which was wet for much of its duration, included 16 safety cars and a 90-minute red flag -Phase before the race ended two hours early.

Montoya, who this year will ride the Shank Acrua ARX-05 in the four IMSA Enduros together with year-round riders Cameron and Olivier Pla, suggested Calling careful traffic this weekend.

« The 24 hours are pretty unique in the way you spend so much time in traffic, » he said.

« This year they added LMP3, hence it gets even crazier how to catch them, just be patient and smart, us d make a big difference. «

The grid was determined by a 100-minute qualifying race held last weekend at the end of the pre-event official roar test. The Action Express Racing Cadillac was started off the rack by Felipe Nasr, Pipo Derani, Mike Conway and Chase Elliott.
