As we all expected, it all boils down to the final day of the Concacaf Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Canada’s U-23s will face Honduras on Thursday evening . The two teams sit at the top of Group B with four points each. Both teams could secure their place in the knockout round by winning this game, but the real prize will be first place in the four-team group.
The Canadians played a fairly toothless 0-0 draw against Haiti on Monday night, with the two teams exchanging chances (some of which might have broken the impasse if it hadn’t been for a spectacular goalkeeper). After the safe use of El Salvador in the first game, Canada was not quite as dangerous the second time.
Honduras is now in a similar boat. They won their opening game 3-0 against a severely understaffed Haiti and then drew 1-1 with El Salvador to put them on a level with Canada.
This all-winners group stage final will be the knockout round to lock. The semi-finals will take place on Sunday evening (both will give the winner direct qualification for the Tokyo Summer Olympics). Canada is hoping to return to the Olympic tournament for the first time since 1984 in Los Angeles, while Honduras looks to qualify for the second year in a row.
