The newly announced 2022 Toyota GR 86 is only a few days old but is already being distributed in local automobile publications in Japan. The LOVECARS! TV! The YouTube channel managed to get both versions of the Toyota-Subaru collaboration for a benchmark test. It’s our first proper look when we see the cars compete against each other.
The test is carried out in Japanese. However, thanks to YouTube’s automatic translation feature, we can get a good idea of what the hosts think of the two cars. They praise both the sharper driveability and improved soundtracks of the vehicle, and praise the smooth delivery of the Subaru and the impressive drive of the GR 86.
Both the new BRZ and GR 86 run on the same platform, with only minor changes on the outside. Under the bonnet sits the same 2.4-liter boxer four-cylinder with a naturally aspirated engine that transmits power to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. They are almost identical on paper, but Toyota says its version is set significantly different. Judging from this initial comparison, it appears that it has kept its promise.
