A flock of black cockatoos sat upstairs as parishioners gathered in Mackay Harbor to celebrate a vision to protect the Great Barrier Reef.
From Finch Hatton to Slade Point, more than 50 residents were at the start of Reef Catchments’ Community Action Plan, which covers the Mackay Isaac Whitsunday area.
CEO Katrina Dent said it grew out of a « fundamental wave » of ideas from the community about priorities « for (her) forest neck » in relation to the reef.
Ms. Dent said funding from the Great Barrier Reef Foundation enabled Reef Catchments to develop a roadmap for implementing the community’s proposals.
« We can talk to potential new partners and say, ‘Hey, we have some great ideas here, who wants to join?' » She said.
One such pilot was the brainchild of students at Mackay Christian College, which included Stuart Reeves.
The 11th grade student said he was « annoyed » about constantly seeing plastic straws and single-use plastics at his school, as well as potential recyclables that end up as general waste.
« Things like cans, bottles – they just go to the trash cans, » said the 11th grade student.
Cass Hayward, project manager for coastal and biodiversity projects at Reef Catchments, said the youth ambassador’s students were encouraging their colleagues to recycle by installing container recycling points and rewarding them with the profits.
Litter and garbage were one of the four pressures identified in the action plan, alongside land-based runoffs, climate change and the lack of education and awareness among the population.
Finch Hatton’s father, Roger Scott, said he went with the start of the plan to be with like-minded people who care about the environment and to introduce his children to good community projects.
His daughter Charli was happy to build an insect hotel thanks to Pioneer Catchment Landcare, one of the many activities available, including creating your own beeswax wraps, meeting the joeys and possums of the Australian Wildlife Rescue Service, and participating in Conservation Volunteers Australia’s National Day of Action belonged to.
