World news – Clippers acquires Rajon Rondo for Lou Williams at close of trading in the NBA

Rajon Rondo returns to LA to fight for another championship. The experienced point guard will do it this time with the clippers.

About half an hour before Thursday’s NBA trading deadline, the Clippers signed a deal to bring Rondo out of Atlanta against three-time sixth man of the year Lou Williams, two second-round picks and cash from a league source .

Williams is returning to Georgia, where he grew up, and back to the Hawks, for whom he played two seasons between 2012 and 2014.

The move came the day after Williams’ 16 points increased his career to 15,000 in a Clippers win in San Antonio. He ended his Clippers career after scoring 4,975 of those points (roughly 33%) over his four seasons with the team. That tenure included his highest-scoring seasons in 2017-18 and 2018-19, when he averaged 22.6 points and 20 points per game, respectively.

After Wednesday’s game, Clippers coach Tyronn Lue spoke about Williams’ ongoing impact on the Clippers.

« You know, he means so much to this team, » said Lue. “We come off the bench and give each other the offensive blow that we need. Tonight he was great. He played for this team before I was even here. And he always generated that. You don’t win Sixth Man multiple times without being able to hit the basketball and play the way it does. It’s just a pleasure and an honor to have him on our team.  »

The 35-year-old Rondo signed a two-year $ 15 million deal with Atlanta ahead of this season – when the Clippers were about to sign him. Williams, 34, has an expiring $ 8 million contract.

This season with the Hawks, Rondo has played 27 games with an average of 3.9 points, 3.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds. He shoots 40.0% from the ground and 37.8% from the depths this season.

But he’s known for his playoff prowess, including last season when his contributions to the Orlando Bubble Lakers championship proved important.

In 121 playoff games, Rondo averaged 13.3 points, 9.0 assists, 5.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game – a trend that he continued last season.

When Rondo entered the postseason, he was a bit of a player for the Lakers with an average of 7.1 points and 5.0 assists and looked almost unplayable on some nights. But he was great in the playoffs: he shot 45.5% off the field, 40% off the ground, averaging 8.9 points and 6.6 assists, and helped dictate the action with intoxicating passes that the Lakers hit Way to her 16th franchise title and Rondo’s second. He also won a title when he was a member of the 2007-08 Boston Celtics.

Lue was assistant in Boston for two seasons while Rondo played there in 2011/12.
