It was a strange game on a strange day, an often ragged NBA competition between opponents of the Pacific Division that lost some of its meaning before even giving a tip after breaking on Wednesday after chaotic events in the U.S. American Capitol had taken place.

« I started the day thinking about how we would protect Lou Williams without messing him up, » said Golden State coach Steve Kerr, « and suddenly it didn’t seem that important anymore, when I turned on the TV when the shootaround started.  »

Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said he had spent part of the day checking in with his players individually – over the phone based on the NBA’s coronavirus logs – and was concerned to learn that none of them were aware of the pro Donald Trump mob was shocked who stormed the Capitol.

Hours before his season debut, Marcus Morris Sr. said he thinks neither he nor his teammates should even step on the field: « If it was my choice, I would not have played any games, » he said. “Stuff is bigger than basketball, man. This is secondary to what is going on in this country. “

When the Clippers and Warriors met later that evening at the Chase Center in San Francisco, they knelt together while playing the national anthem and then went to work. Her work was a break from the real drama of the day: basketball, so nice game.

Well it was some time on Wednesday when the Clippers were winners, 108-101.

LA (6-3) was at full strength for the first time this season in the hectic affair in which both teams scored 33 turnovers and 47 fouls (the Clippers went 25 for 25 off the free-throw line, the third most free ) Throws made with no mistakes in franchise history).
For his part, Morris was 2-2 off the streak, stepping into line for the first time this season after missing the first eight games with a pain in his right knee. He said he volunteered to come off the bench so as not to disrupt the Clippers’ burgeoning chemistry with Nicolas Batum on the starting grid.

« It wasn’t ‘I want to get off the bench’ anymore. It was more like ‘I want to help the team in any way possible,’ said Morris. » And if that comes off the bench, I didn’t want to that TLue (the feeling) that he can’t tell me that or ask me that question. Both were fine, but I saw how well these guys deal with the first unit and I thought I could help the second unit get things like that, play with leadership. “

And Morris, who shot 50.5 percent from the field and 47.5 percent from the 3-point range in 13 playoff games in the bubble, picked up where he left off and made the top three Shots before finishing with 12 points and 4 for 9 from the field and 2 for 6 from 3-point area.

Another bonus for the Clippers: Kawhi Leonard paused his usual injury management protocol. When he started on Wednesday, he appeared for the first time since April 4-5, 2017 in both games of a scheduled duel – around 134 games according to ESPN Stats & Info.

And Paul George was back in the line-up too after missing the Staples Center loss to San Antonio on Tuesday with a sore right ankle that he tweaked during a win in Phoenix on Sunday.

« It was a tough game tonight, » Lue admitted afterwards. « Just Kawhi’s first duel in a while, PG missed the last game and played tonight so he was a little rusty and greeted Marcus tonight who was really good in the first half. I’m just trying to play with different lineups and find out.  »

The Clippers valued all of their contributions in a tight competition – consistently closer than any of the team’s other games this season when they hadn’t played a game that a team didn’t run by at least 20.

Leonard and George both finished with 21 points in a game in which the teams opened a combined 3:19 from the 3-point range in the first quarter and in which neither side had more than 12 points.
On the track, the Warriors battled control with an 18-2 run that gave them an 89:83 lead, but the Clippers retaliated with a 10-2 boost from two consecutive buckets of Leonard, who followed a patented foul-line jumper with a floater that got it to play 93-91 at 6:03.

And then, in the final minutes, the Clippers kick put the game out of reach: They got three consecutive clutch 3-pointers – one from Patrick Beverley (seven points, three assists) 4:14, then two von Batum (13 points) on consecutive possessions – to build a 106-97 lead by 2:58.

Serge Ibaka had 12 points and 14 rebounds for his first double-double as a clipper, but Kerr’s roster has managed to slow Williams down for what it’s worth: the star sub that Golden State sang so many times finished with three points on 1- for-4 shooting and three assists.

And the Clippers had a solution for Steph Curry, who finished with 13 points, shooting 5 for 17 from the field and 1 for 6 from the depths. The two-time league MVP had 92 goals in their last two games, including his career high of 62 against Portland on Sunday.

« Our philosophy is to eliminate the best player, » said Lue, noting that Eric Paschall and Andrew Wiggins both played well, scoring 19 points each. « Other than that, other guys will have good games. »

It’s the same on weird days when it’s natural to be distracted by stuff bigger than basketball.

« Just read through updates and read up, » said George when asked about the date that led to the hint. “But I mean, it’s no surprise. There are two different worlds in which we live and that was clear as a day. The respect for colored people is – there is none. It’s just the time we live in. It is very unhappy. We only see people’s colors.

« It just goes to show why voting is so important. At the end of the day, Trump is who we elected and who we put in office, and you see what his beliefs are and what kind of person he is. That’s what matters.

« He gathered his people and his people gathered behind him and just … nothing was done about how they approached their protest, » George continued, noting, like Kawhi Leonard, the different treatment of the mostly white rioters on Wednesday versus those who took them to the streets in the summer to support the Black Lives Matter movement.

« We have tried to protest with peace and, you know, we are looked down and we are this and we are. But we see them protest. It’s unfortunate, but it’s a constant dialogue and constant Conversations that we have to have with all races.  »
