In 2021, the Washington, D.C. Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) offered 1,500 trips through Lyft on St. Patrick’s Day. Each ride was a voucher for no more than $ 15. Some cities in Indiana also offered Lyft and Uber rides through the Sober Ride Indiana program. Other states also regularly offered some options for disabled drivers.
On the night of St. Patrick’s Day on March 17, 2021, rumors spread of allegedly free rides on Lyft and Uber in the US for disabled drivers.Readers may have seen headlines like, « Uber, Lyft, To Bring Disabled Drivers Home Free. » Articles like this contained some truth. We found no evidence that Uber and Lyft were offering free rides nationwide that day. The stories seemed to be mostly about Washington, DC, and a few cities in Indiana.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) announced it would offer free rides to up to 1,500 people. The amount for the St. Patrick’s Day free ride was capped at $ 15, which is a cap of $ 22,500 for total rides.

We couldn’t find any information about free rides for Lyft and Uber elsewhere. However, some cities and states have special programs to get people home safely. For example, the Texas Department of Transportation has previously launched its website SoberRides.org:
Drunk driving can cost you heavy fines, jail sentences, or even your life. On this #StPatricksDay, schedule a safe journey home at https://t.co/zANoiS04Zp pic.twitter.com/HcNrwTCPcq
Regardless of St. Patrick’s Day, both Lyft and Uber tweeted about options for people who want help with Travel to a COVID-19 vaccination center required.
Overall, there were no nationwide free rides via Lyft and Uber on St. Patrick’s Day in 2021. However, some cities offered special programs that worked with the companies. Other cities and states have already had options for potentially disabled drivers.
We previously shared a similar story where Lyft offered free rides to job seekers who needed a way to travel for interviews.
