World news – Down best career to lead White Ferns to a competitive overall win over Australia


A career high for opener Lauren Down helped the White Ferns score a competitive total in the first ODI against Australia at the Bay Oval today.

Down, whose best ODI score to date was just 15, scored 90 of 134 balls, leading the White Ferns to 212 points.

Amelia Kerr and captain Amy Satterthwaite came on for 33 and 32 respectively, but a late breakdown of the innings meant the White Ferns couldn’t get their strong start into one After Kerr fell in the 38th round, the White Ferns lost seven wickets for only 53 runs and were knocked out with seven balls in the innings.

Pace bowler Megan caused rubble most of the damage, taking four for 32 of nine overs, while Nicola Carey also contributed three for 34.
