An emergency alert has been issued for parts of the Gold Coast due to severe thunderstorms cause heavy rains and flash floods in much of southeast Queensland.

Gold Coast City Council urged residents of Currumbin, Mudgeeraba and Tallebudgera to monitor the situation and consider moving to a higher level, as heavy rains could likely affect low-lying properties.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for several community areas earlier in the day, with Hotham Creek south of Beenleigh recording 113 millimeters in an hour.

On the Gold Coast and on the scenic edge, Mount Tamborine took in 98mm in less than two hours before 2.15 p.m. And according to a storm chaser, Mount Nathan recorded 105mm in one hour.
