World news – England squad: Alexander-Arnold dropped out when Bellingham was drawn in despite Covid-19 quarantine concerns on Goal.com

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been banned from Gareth Southgate's final English squad, including Jesse Lingard, John Stones and Luke Shaw

Liverpool full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has been banned from Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad. Jesse Lingard, John Stones and Luke Shaw were all there for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Jude Bellingham, meanwhile, could make his competitive debut – if Covid-19 quarantine rules allow him to play – while Aston forward Ollie Watkins Villa earned his first appearance after ousting Leeds United star Patrick Bamford.

The big news concerns the absence of Alexander-Arnold. Southgate says he doesn’t think the Reds right-back played well enough for his club to warrant a game.

England will face San Marino at Wembley on March 25, before in Albania will host more games. On March 31, Poland – which can do without Robert Lewandowski due to quarantine rules – will be at home.

Southgate have made many changes to their previous squad and Manchester United defender Shaw has been welcomed back from the international wild.

The last of the 25-year-old’s eight international matches for England was won in 2018. When fighting for form and fitness, he slipped in the pecking order. However, he was in the best shape of his career in 2020-21 and has earned a spot on the squad.

Another man, Lingard, who was at risk of becoming a forgotten figure at Old Trafford, is also back in Southgate’s plans.

The 28-year-old was successful on a prolific loan at West Ham and his creative qualities came back to the fore on a top English stage.

Manchester City center-back, Stones , is also trying to get the most out of a national reversal of luck when he returns to the national team.

The 26-year-old defender has not represented his country since November 2019 but has struggled with a number of good performances under Pep Guardiola not to be overlooked.

The vacant Aston Villa striker Watkins has also secured a place in the K after an impressive season in the Premier League for Aston Villa in which he has scored 10 league goals ader deserves.

Dortmund midfielder Bellingham was also called up despite doubts about his availability due to travel restrictions inside and outside Germany due to the corona virus.

Southgate said of Bellingham: « We left him at that moment and it sees it it looks like we can’t take him in. The quarantine rules in Germany look like they’re going to exclude him. As we’ve seen, these rules can do that. « Change so quickly while we investigate that we wanted to put him on the squad.

» We have a really good relationship with Dortmund so there are no problems between us and the club. We told Jude that we would leave him there, but it currently looks doubtful that he will unfortunately join. «

The most noticeable omission is Alexander-Arnold, who has been an important pillar of the English squad since the 2018 World Cup, but was overlooked in its poor form for Liverpool, which coincided with the Reds’ break in the Premier League.

Of the decision to leave the right-back, Southgate said: « There are areas where we have an incredible competition for Have places. Trent is very unhappy but I don’t think he has played at the level he has found in recent years.

« He’s getting closer to that now. In the last few weeks he has definitely taken steps in the right direction We just believe that Reece James and Kieran Trippier have had exceptional seasons with their clubs and Kyle Walker is in great shape with Manchester City.

« We have other players in the league who are also doing well in this position – Cash at Aston Villa, Ayling at Leeds – and we have two very good right-backs with the U21s. It’s a remarkable position of strength, and what I said to Trent earlier today, I would have called Kyle and Kieran right away in the past.

« Your reaction was good. You accepted the challenge and were back on the squad. Trent is a super talent and I’m sure he will play a big role in the future. He’s missing out this time, but we could imagine.  » sit here in summer and he’s with us. «

Also missing from the squad is Leeds striker Bamford, although the 27-year-old made an impression after his club’s promotion to the top division this season.

Jack Grealish did not recover from his injury in time to to take his place in the squad while Danny Ings is also absent after suffering a muscle problem in Southampton’s win against Sheffield United.
