LAS VEGAS – At first, Evan Mobley, who missed the last 13 minutes of the first half with nasty trouble, seemed like a bad omen in the quarterfinals of the USC’s Pac-12 tournament against Utah.

It turned out to be exactly what Mobley’s legs needed when the game expanded into double overtime.

Mobley scored half of his career height of 26 points after regulation ended to move the Trojans to 24th place in a 91-85 win over Utah that missed the game’s final eight field attempts.

The runner-up USC (22-6, 16-5 in Pac-12) will reach the conference semifinals on Friday at 8:30 pm. against the winner of the Colorado Cal game that took place late Thursday night.

Isaiah White contributed 14 points, while Tahj Eaddy and Drew Peterson each scored 13 points to complement Mobley’s night.

But Mobley, Pac-12 Player of the Year, had his fingerprints throughout the game despite his early absence. He grabbed nine rebounds and blocked five shots. After half-time he set the tone with an early dunk after scoring just two points in the first half.

« I just stayed focused, stayed locked in, and tried to encourage my teammates while they played without me, » said Mobley. “And in the second half you just try to come in and attack. I was well rested.  »

The first extra time ended with seventh place on the grid in Utah (12-13, 8-12), who just played the perfect game and made a perfect shot. Head coach Larry Krystkowiak called for time out to create a 3-pointer for Alfonso Plummer, who nailed him over the 7-foot Mobley’s long arms to get the result.

Tahj Eaddy’s layup on the summer at the other end was too strong and the game went to a second overtime.

« Sometimes a dump can happen when you think you have won the game or have a great chance of winning it and that has happened to us twice, » said Enfield. « Our players did a great job this second extension of staying tough, staying focused and winning basketball. »

But of course the Trojans couldn’t get out of regulation with the win due to free-throw shots.

Ironically, USC, which had major line problems this season, started the game 17-21 with free throws. After 14 seconds and a two point lead, Ethan Anderson missed both attempts.

The next possession, Anderson was called for a foul with 2.3 seconds left and Ian Martinez hit two off the line to tie the result. White’s quarter-finals clinked from the edge to send the game into overtime.

Nonetheless, USC went 12 to 16 off the free-throw line in the two overtime hours to take the win.

« You have to advance in close games if they are purposely tainting you, » Enfield said.

When Mobley went on the bench for 13 minutes in the first half, USC did not sway. After Utah had a four point lead with a Riley Battin jumper, the Trojans took a 9-0 lead, fueled by two Tahj Eaddy steals, who were turned into a dunk by Max Agbonkpolo and an Isaiah Mobley 3-pointer.

The Trojans’ first-half lead rose to nine with a white jumper, but USC opted for a five-point half-time advantage after the Utes shot to 40.9% in the half.

Nevertheless, the Trojans collected many minutes. Isaiah Mobley played 46, Eaddy 44 and Peterson 42. It could come back to hurt USC in Friday’s semifinals regardless of who the opposition is.

But with a potential spot in the Pac-12 championship game on the line, USC won’t hold anything back on Friday.

« Our boys will be playing big minutes again tomorrow, » said Enfield, « so they’d better be ready. »
