Visitors to Animal Adventure Park in New York will soon be able to see a rare animal – a white fur kangaroo. The zoo revealed that one of their kangaroos had given birth to an all-white fur joey, a post shared on social media on Friday.
The white joey was born a few months ago to a red kangaroo. The « extremely rare » white color wasn’t revealed until the staff recently took it out of the mother’s pouch for full inspection.
« This is not your normal red kangaroo! » Animal Adventure Park wrote in a Facebook post that went viral massively. “Red kangaroos are born the size of your thumbnail and develop much of their development in the mother’s pouch outside of the womb. At around 4 to 5 months of age, we do our first full ‘pull’ and remove the baby from the mother’s pouch for full Inspection and medical check-up, and then put the joey back in Mommy’s pouch so she can lift it. «
Your inspection Friday revealed that the joey of a red kangaroo named Rosie with white fur was born. Take a look at pictures of the baby kangaroo below:
Leukism, a partial loss of pigmentation, is different from albinism. The zoo believes this Joey is leukistic because his eyes are black and « not your normally expected red-eyed albino mutation. »
« We are not aware of any leukistic red kangaroo in the United States. This proves how rare this is Event is! » The zoo wrote.
The announcement caused a stir on social media, where the post received over 25,000 « likes » and over 2,400 comments.
