Magazine: Why McLaren can win again in F1

The McLaren rebirth and its continued advances in Formula 1 are the focus of this week’s Autosport magazine today (February 4th).

Formula 1 plans to go to great lengths this year to increase interest in the US as a second race continues to be judged in the country.

Liberty Media has long had ambitions to take the position of Strengthening F1 in the US, and talks with a project in Miami to hold a race there.

While former CEO Chase Carey, who led these discussions, has been replaced by Stefano Domenicali is the new one Head of F1 equally eager to do more in America.

Speaking to select media outlets, including Autosport, Domenicali said Thursday that F1 is weighing how best to get into a second race alongside the current event in Austin Fits.

« Miami is more advanced on the discussion, but there are others in other areas of the American country, » said Domenicali. « But they are not at the level where I can say, ‘Yes, they are there’ and I can expect something to happen.

» I think we will decide what in the next few months in relation to a possible discussion regarding this country and any rotation or stabilization with two [Grand Prix] that are set to take place. So it’s a work in progress. «  »

Domenicali said that one change that would take place in 2021, however, was the attention F1 was devoting to raising the profile of the championship in the US.

He says F1 needs to do more to stay in the spotlight all year round than just leading up to the race in the country.

« I can guarantee you there is now a lot of interest in Formula 1 in the US, » he said.

« What we don’t have to do about a bug is have the US fed F1 news every day.

» It is wrong to go there for a week and let’s say you have an incredible boost a week before the Austin race and then remain silent.

« What we have is a communications plan that is pretty strong in the US. We have to continually hammer information with the right channels.

» It will take a lot of startup time in terms of investing, but the returns will be huge. So this is part of our strategic global communication campaign that we need to push forward this year. «
