World news – F5 Networks Closes $ 500M Volterra Deal to Provide Additional Expertise

F5 Networks completed the $ 500 million acquisition of edge specialist Volterra, which the application service provider can use to build a secure and scalable edge platform for businesses and service providers.

« Together we will deliver the capabilities for businesses, including world-class security and scalability, that were previously lacking on the verge, » said François Locoh-Donou, CEO of F5, of the deal.

According to François Locoh-Donou, President and CEO of F5, F5 can use Volterra’s technology to build a secure and scalable edge platform, Edge 2.0, for companies and service providers.

« Together we will deliver the capabilities for business, including world-class security and scalability, that were previously lacking, » Locoh-Donou said in a statement.

Earlier this month, the application delivery specialist first announced plans to acquire Volterra, a four-year-old startup with an edge-as-a-service platform.

Volterra was founded in Santa Clara, California, and owns a platform that enables companies to create, deploy, secure and operate applications and data in all public and private clouds and edge computing environments in a uniform manner. The Volterra team has joined F5 networks.

Enterprises are struggling to deploy and secure applications that are now available on local and wide area networks, public clouds, content delivery networks, and other edge infrastructures. F5’s first generation Edge solution – Edge 1.0 – could solve some of these problems, said Kara Sprague, executive vice president and general manager of F5’s BIG-IP product portfolio, in a blog post on the Volterra deal. Volterra’s technology will help F5 evolve its platform and move away from a « closed » edge offering, Sprague said.

In particular, Edge 2.0 will help service providers and companies deliver new experiences to their end customers by automating redundant processes, providing end-to-end security, increasing application agility and leveraging application knowledge, according to Sprague.

« We’re looking forward to redefining the benefit together and making adaptive applications a reality for our customers, » she said.
