UPDATE 2:15 p.m .: Some streets in the Byron Shire are being closed as the council warns people to be vigilant while driving and stay home if they can.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued a severe weather warning for heavy rain on the coast stretching north from Wollongong to the Queensland border.

A minor flood watch has also been issued for many river basins, including the Brunswick River and Marshalls Creek.

Heavy rain this morning (March 21) on a humid river basin and steady rain for more than a week has resulted in local flooding in areas such as Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, Brunswick Heads, Ocean Shores and South Golden Beach.

The council’s staff respond as quickly as possible to road, sewer and drainage emergencies. People in need of flood assistance, including sandbags, should call SES on 132 500.

« Under no circumstances should people drive through floods – it’s just not worth the risk, » said Phil Holloway, director of infrastructure services.

« It’s impossible to tell how fast the water is moving or if there is dirt under the water or the road surface is damaged, » said Holloway.

« People should also take into account that the predictions are that this type of weather will continue for the next few days, » he said.

To report problems with roads, sewers and drains, call the council’s emergency number – 02 6622 7022.

In Ballina, the council advises that the Ballina Waste Management Center (WMC) has limited services due to heavy rainfall.

Ballina Byron Gateway Airport is open. Please contact the airlines for flight information. Flights can be delayed at other airports due to the weather.

In the heavy rain this morning, there is water over an urban street. Note that conditions change quickly. So check for any road closures and drive to the conditions.

We encourage you to stay safe and respect the terms. Please stay home if you can. But if you need to go – DO NOT drive or walk through floods.

The city council said, « Our crew periodically checks the roads in our Shire to point out flooded roads. Not all urban roads can be signposted, so be aware of the changing conditions in your area. »
