World news – Ford eventually had to recall 3 million cars over airbag concerns

Ford has just lost a long battle with the government over the contract to recall about 3 million cars – and it won’t be cheap.

The affected vehicles from 2006 to 2012 have defective airbag inflators on the Driver’s side that could burst and blow up metal parts.

Ford plans to put the inflators in around 2.7 million cars in the US and around 300,000 in Canada and elsewhere at a cost of around $ 610 million The Dearborn, Michigan-based automaker said Thursday. Ford said it had filed a petition with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to get out of the July 2017 recall on the grounds that the The risks emanating from the problematic parts are so low that they are « not relevant for safety ».

The vehicles affected include the models Ranger, Fusion and Edge from Ford as well as the Lincoln MKZ / Zephyr, the Lincoln MKX and Mercury Milan, Ford announced in a securities filing.

The airbag parts were manufactured by Takata, whose defective inflators have resulted in 27 deaths and at least 400 injuries worldwide. The parts were responsible for the largest automobile recall in American history, affecting more than 67 million inflators.

Ford said the cost of this recall will be treated as a special item in its fourth quarter financial report and will not affect it on adjusted earnings per share of the company.
