Fox News, which has seen a decline in its rating leadership since President Trump lost the election, announced a major overhaul of its daily schedule on Monday.
The conservative network that is typically the dominant market leader among Cable news viewers have seen CNN and MSNBC outperform in Nielsen ratings for many hours of the day since the November 3rd election. The network, which had its best year in 2020, was a distant third last week while reporting on the pro-Trump uprising at the Capitol and its aftermath.
Executives at Fox News announced back in the fall that they would would make changes to the daily schedule after the election. The changes will take effect January 18.
Television news organizations and networks typically make staff changes when a new White House administration joins. CNN also announced changes to its line-up on Monday.
The most important change for Fox News is the move of « The Story With Martha MacCallum » from 7pm. Eastern Time slot to make room for a new opinion show tentatively named « Fox News Primetime » that will have a rotating group of hosts.

MacCallum’s programming, which included interviews with news makers and commentators, will air at 3:00 p.m. East. Audiences on « The Story » had plummeted in the past few months when Newsmax, a competing right-wing channel, and its host Greg Kelly gained viewers in an hour.
While Kelly has never outperformed MacCallum in the ratings, his program offers an alternative for Fox News audiences looking for solace after the election. Fox News viewers tend to tune out after a Democratic government is elected. Overall, Newsmax has averaged 326,000 viewers since the prime-time election, well below Fox News’ latest numbers, which averaged nearly 3 million viewers on Friday.
Kelly, a former Fox News correspondent, was a relentless defender of Trump’s attempts to overcome his election loss to President-elect Joe Biden, even in the days after Trump’s supporters orchestrated a siege of the Capitol.
MacCallum remains a leading co-anchor and cares at Fox News next to Bret Baier for the latest news and special events.

Trump’s repeatedly discredited attempt to reverse the November results was further supported by the Fox News star.
The addition of an opinion program at 7:00 p.m. in the hour prior to the takeover of Conservative stalwarts Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham through Fox News on prime time is clearly a response to the new competition. While Fox News’ prime-time shows have also lagged behind CNN and MSNBC, they are not experiencing the kind of audience losses that occur during the day.
The network also adds a new two-hour afternoon newscast with the correspondent for the White House, John Roberts, added. America Reports With John Roberts & Sandra Smith will air from 1pm to 3pm. East.
Anchor Bill Hemmer loses his solo lesson in the afternoon and accompanies Dana Perino on the two-hour newscast « America’s Newsroom » from 9 am to 11 am. Hemmer had been co-anchor in the time slot before replacing Shepard Smith when he left his Fox News show that afternoon in 2019. Outnumbered Overtime host Harris Faulkner moves to an earlier hour – 11am – and their program is called « The Faulkner Focus ».
« Your world with Neil Cavuto » stays at 4 pm, followed by « The Five » at 5 pm. and « Special Report with Bret Baier » at 6pm.
CNN announced that « The Lead with Jake Tapper » will be extended to two hours and will air from 4pm to 6pm. East. « The Situation Room » with Wolf Blitzer will be reduced by an hour and will be broadcast at 6 pm. Blitzer will continue to lead the network’s topical coverage.
CNN also adds Dana Bash, its lead political correspondent, to co-host Tapper’s State of the Union Sunday morning program. Political correspondent Abby Phillip has been named anchor for Sunday’s Inside Politics. John King remains anchor of the weekday edition.
Stephen Battaglio writes about television and media business for the Los Angeles Times from New York. His coverage of the television industry has been featured in TV Guide, the New York Daily News, the New York Times, Fortune, the Hollywood Reporter, Inside.com and Adweek. He is also the author of three books on television, including a biography of talk show host and producer David Susskind.
