Boris Johnson is « an unrepentant and die-hard liar » who doesn’t follow the same rules as others, said a former French diplomat in Great Britain in her new book.

Sylvie Bermann, the French ambassador to Great Britain during the Brexit vote, also claimed Brexiters were consumed by a hatred of Germany and gripped by a myth that they liberated Europe during its decline during World War II.

Bermann described Brexit as a triumph of emotions over the sanity gained through a campaign full of lies that exploited negative attitudes towards migration from personalities such as Johnson and Michael Gove.

Ambassador to Great Britain from 2014 to 2017, Bermann is one of the highest diplomats in the French diplomatic service , which attacks the UK government’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, which alongside Donald Trump ad he was the worst in the world and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil.

She predicted that Johnson would try to use Covid to hide the real economic cost of Brexit to the UK economy.

Johnson, she says , comes from a class at Eton and Oxford University who believe they are allowed to use language to provoke. He describes him as intelligent and charming and « uses lies to beautify reality, as a game and as an instrument of power. The ends justify the means. He has no rules. »

In her book Goodbye Britannia, Bermann described the Psyche that led to Brexit. She describes « the partisans of Brexit as reciting a story in which Britain is never defeated, never attacked ». She suggests a country that single-handedly won World War II, liberated the continent and deserved gratitude.

Regarding the more than 22 million Russians who died in World War II, she says: « This doesn’t bother them Brexiters’ discourse spreading the myth that Britain is liberating Europe on its own and needs no one. «

She said France owed the British thanks, but it was » right to remember that they were not alone and you cannot live with a story that ended in June 1944 « .

She also claimed that David Cameron had not taken seriously the threat of losing the Brexit referendum and that the defeat was the first sign of populism, who conquered a government in Europe.

In the book she asks: « How this country, whose influence was decisive in Brussels, that outrageously rolled out the red carpet for French entrepreneurs and that Xi Jinping in October 2015 as To r had chosen to Europe, at the beginning of a golden How did it set out to submerge itself? «

She predicted: » Boris Johnson’s temptation will be to hide the Brexit bill under the Covid rug, which is worth more than £ 200bn in 2020, almost as much as the total contribution of the UK to the European Union since joining in 1973 £ 215 billion. «

She said it was inevitable that Britain would now have difficulty finding influence outside the EU and that a Scottish independence referendum would hang over his head.

She said she believed the EU would join feel obliged to start talks with Scotland in the event of a referendum to leave the UK, but this is not the official position of the EU, partly due to pressure from Spain. Madrid fears the effects of the Catalan separatists if an independent Scotland is allowed to join the EU.
