Fritz will next face Aljaz Bedene, after the Slovenian Egor Gerasimov from Belarus defeated 6: 4, 7: 6 (5).
The fifth Jan-Lennard Struff from Germany prevailed against the British qualifier Liam Broady with 6: 4, 6: 2 and booked a quarter-finals against Nikoloz Basilashvili.
The fourth-occupied Basilashvili had to save five match points before he could finally secure a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win against the Slovak qualifier Jozef Kovalik.
The ATP 250 tournament at the Cagliari Tennis Club was added to the calendar with a one-year license following a similar event in Forte Village in October.
