Scottish Secretary Alister Jack has claimed the Scottish government has banned transport officials from participating in a Westminster-led review

The Secretary of State for Scotland made the remarks during this morning’s session on Scottish issues in the House of Commons

Member of Parliament for Douglas Ross asked him about the Trade Union Connectivity Review, announced this weekend by Westminster, which seeks to strengthen connections by road, rail and sea between the UK’s four countries

However, M Jack said Michael Matheson, the Scottish Government’s Transport Minister had blocked officials from getting involved in the plans

He told the House of Commons: ‘The Union Connectivity Review, which is being led by Sir Peter Hendy, whom I met yesterday, is a very important initiative for Scotland and the UK. as a whole, and it will create very interesting opportunities However, I am concerned that Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Infrastructure and Connectivity Michael Matheson has told Transport Scotland not to participate in the review »

« I urge M Matheson to think again and get his officials involved It cannot be in Scotland’s best interests for the SNP to play politics with an issue so important to our economic future »

He reiterated the claims a second time when asked about transportation by Tory MP Peter Gibson, who represents Darlington

M Gibson said rail links between Scotland and Darlington « will be vital to the success of our home market » and asked: « [M Jack] will join me in welcoming the Independent Review of Union Connectivity, led by Sir Peter Hendy, which will examine how we can improve our transport infrastructure to bring our communities closer together and improve access to jobs and opportunities ?  »

The Scottish secretary said; “The Union Connectivity Review will explore ways to build back better As I said, I met Sir Peter Hendy yesterday, and it is extremely disappointing – it bears repeating – that the Transport Secretary Matheson urged his officials not to engage in the review, to the detriment of Scotland and its economy

« Jack’s comments might be taken a bit more seriously if one of his MSP colleagues had essentially used a committee session today to say that jobs at Prestwick should be sacrificed.

“Regarding the review, we are still awaiting a response to the concerns expressed in our letter of joining to the decentralized administrations sent last month

« But this study is clearly part of the Conservative government’s broader agenda to undermine the decentralization settlement across a range of policy areas.

“The very fact that it was organized without virtually any consultation with devolved administrations – although transport has been a decentralized issue since 1999 – speaks for itself

“While we seek to engage constructively with the UK government, we will absolutely not endorse anything that in any way undermines the Decentralization Regulation The ball is in the court of the UK government to prove this is not the case – but so far we frankly have little faith in this process. »

Meanwhile, Ian Murray, Scottish shadow secretary, asked M Jack what progress had been made on US whiskey tariffs crippling industry in Scotland

He also asked how M Jack was trying to help Scottish workers ‘on the edge of the precipice’ lose jobs due to coronavirus pandemic

Regarding prices, M Jack replied: « It is unfair It is harmful to industry and consumers However, in the trade negotiations that have opened with the United States, we now have an agreement to have a bilateral discussion – in others terms, no longer use EU negotiators – with the US The good news I can tell him is that we have moved into a new phase. The Secretary of State for International Trade is starting discussions this week to try to resolve this problem  »

M Jack said for the workers, « unfortunately we know we cannot save all businesses »

He explained: « Recycling programs and the kickstart program are being put in place, and we have reduced the VAT for hotels, leisure and tourism to 5%. To protect the Scottish economy, I encourage the Scottish government to make restrictions as local as possible
