An air ambulance and firefighters responded to the horrific incident that occurred near High Wycombe around 6 p.m.
In a tweet, the South Central Ambulance Service said: « A large number of our paramedics witnessed the collision on the M40 tonight to treat more than 20 injured
« We had seven ambulance teams, two paramedics, a tactical advisor, two hazardous area response teams, the Thames Valley intensive care car on the scene
« Air Ambulance and two staff on leave from a nearby Ambulance Trust and local hospital
« They assessed more than 20 injured, 11 were taken to hospital with serious or minor injuries
« Other wounded were assessed at the scene by our teams but did not require hospital treatment. A huge thank you to everyone who attended this evening »
The accident caused approximately five miles of streaks as ambulance and police work on the scene
