The work, in front of a beauty salon, shows a girl hula-hooping with a bicycle tire It rode on Tuesday, next to a bicycle that is missing its rear wheel

Amid speculation whether the room was a Banksy, a screen was installed in it In an ironic twist, soon after, the screen was sprayed with graffiti

A photo of the work was css-yidnqd-InlineLink: link {color: # 3F3F42;} css-yidnqd-InlineLink: visited {color: # 696969;} css-yidnqd-InlineLink: link, css-yidnqd- InlineLink: visited {font-weight: bolder; border-bottom: 1px solid #BABABA; -webkit-text-decoration: none; text-decoration: none;} css-yidnqd-InlineLink: link: hover, css-yidnqd-InlineLink: visited: hover, css-yidnqd-InlineLink: link: focus, css-yidnqd-InlineLink: visited: focus {border-bottom -color: currentcolor; border-bottom-width: 2px; color: # B80000;} @ support (text-underline-offset: 025em) {css-yidnqd-InlineLink: link, css-yidnqd-InlineLink: visited {border-bottom: none; -webkit-text-decoration: underline #BABABA; text-decoration: underline #BABABA; -webkit-text-decoration-thick: 1px; text-decoration-thick: 1px; -webkit-text-decoration-skip-ink: none; text-decoration-skip-ink: none; text-underline-offset: 025em;} css-yidnqd-InlineLink: link: hover, css-yidnqd-InlineLink: visited: hover, css-yidnqd-InlineLink: link: focus, css-yidnqd-InlineLink: visited: focus {- webkit-text-decoration-color: currentcolor; text-decoration-color: currentcolor; -webkit-text-decoration-thick: 2px; text-decoration-thick: 2px; color: # B80000;}} posted on Banksy’s Instagram on Saturday morning

The lounge where the work appeared outside is at the intersection of Rothesay Avenue and Ilkeston Road in Lenton, a popular residential area for students

After the announcement, people started arriving to have their photos taken with the artwork, with around 30 people at one point, as well as police officers

Nicola Marshall, 39, from Clifton, Nottingham, came with her son Klaye to see the work She said: ‘It’s a bit of positivity with all this coronavirus going on’

Danial Ahmer, 23, a student who lives on Rothesay Avenue, said: « I think it’s eye-catching It was a bit surreal and haphazard to see it here »

Banksy’s expert Professor Paul Gough of Bournemouth University of the Arts – who initially doubted this was the real deal – said he was « really pleased » that the work was by the artist

Speaking about the significance of the artwork, he said: « It’s curious The last four or five [Banksy’s articles] are all related to Covid or something in the news This is much more whimsical and much more of the moment It’s someone having fun

« Maybe this is the message: ‘we are having a hard time, try to make the most of it and have fun with something that is broken »

« The hoop is holistic The circle is a positive and life-affirming element Even with a broken bike she finds something she can play with »

He added: « The picture of Nottingham is a different kind of painting [of Banksy] than what I’ve seen before There is less fluidity and a more pixelated effect, especially around the chin and parts of the face «

Banksy began painting trains and spray walls in his hometown of Bristol in the 1990s, and quickly left his artistic mark around the world

He is known to make fun of big business and send political messages through his work

On an unassuming street on the outskirts of Nottingham city, there is an almost seaside atmosphere

The excitement brought together people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all parts of the city, with a constant stream of people lining up to take a photo with the artwork

Many are just happy to have something else to talk about besides increasing levels of coronavirus, and something to put the city in a more positive light – although maintaining social distancing is definitely a challenge

A spokesperson for Nottingham City Council said it was « unbelievable » that Banksy had confirmed the job was his, adding « we obviously don’t know why he chose Nottingham but we are a famous city for our rebels, like Robin Hood of course «

He said: « The fact that the artwork features a bicycle could refer to the nearby Raleigh factory famous for its role in Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, the novel by the ‘local author Alan Sillitoe and the iconic 1960 film with Albert Finney «

The council installed the temporary work cover earlier in the week and now he is known to be a true Banksy, advice will be taken on what should happen next, the spokesperson said

He added: « We know people will be tempted to come and see it for themselves, but we must avoid large gatherings during the current pandemic, so we urge everyone to stay away »
