Even though I find it hard to believe, this issue marks my third anniversary as editor of this magazine I’m not quite sure how fast the weather is. is over, though for all the obvious reasons this past year mostly feels like it’s gone in a flash for many of us
I’m always happy it’s a December issue that marks my birthday at Vogue I love them There’s something so enveloping and emotional about this time of year, and embracing that we weave together glamor and sparkle and comfort and cultural highlights with an emphasis on family and relationships, plus â € “ what every good december issue needs just a little thoughtfulness That brings the year to a close
Again, for all the obvious reasons, it seemed important to make 2020 an extra-special event On that note, I am delighted to publish, in Royal Wisdom, on page 212, a new portrait and a interview with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales A longtime supporter of the fashion industry’s efforts to become more sustainable, the Prince worked with Yoox Net-a-Porter on an exciting project Created in collaboration with The Prince’s Foundation , The Modern Artisan is a training program that provides students from the UK and Italy with invaluable experience in textile design and sustainable production methods Their first capsule collection of luxury clothing for women and men launches this month
The Prince tells me about the project during an animated Zoom call we had earlier this year between Dumfries House and Vogue House. I have known His Royal Highness for quite some time, and like many I am still struck by his authenticity He has been an advocate for the environment and sustainability for 50 years “Buy better, buy less” was his mantra many decades before it became a buzzword of our time He was truly an oracle in the world. era, and it remains just as passionate today in addition to being a very elegant man in his own right
The Prince is also a renowned theater fan, and I hope he will be one of the many to appreciate the still majesty of photographer Jack Davison’s portfolio of images taken in the shuttered theater houses in London (Dramatic Pause, page 192) Theater, the age-old cornerstone of British culture, has suffered like so many creative industries in recent months, and so we’ve brought together some of the best performers on the London scene into performance spaces now. empty as a rallying cry From Cate Blanchett to Imelda Staunton, Jude Law to Paapa Essiedu, Sophie Okonedo to Andrew Scott, a roster of talented actors reflect on the power and purpose of their art, and remind us that we have not just need to celebrate this country s unique theatrical landscape, but to protect it too especially since we are entering a difficult new year
There is, however, room for a little whimsy On page 228, photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott lead us through an exquisite meditation on form, while on page 206 the gloves (and jewels!) Are on, for a sparkling and festive pick-me-up in Glove Affair On our Trends pages, it’s all about velvet, sequins and a touch of red, and there is a particularly Point of View section poignant this month: on page 102, Avni Doshi, the year s Escape Literary Star, writes about Absent Families â € “ something that many of us can sympathize with at the moment; Meanwhile, on page 104, mother and daughter Anthea and Hattie Rowan write fondly about Hattie’s diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder, and what it has meant for her life in a pandemic
Then, of course, there’s B I had the immense honor of interviewing Beyoncé and working with talented up-and-coming photographer Kennedi Carter on a 20-page fashion story At just 21 years old, Kennedi becomes the youngest photographer to capture a British Vogue cover everyone always wants to know what it’s like to work with Beyoncé and her amazing team, and the answer is Flawless A perfectionist at heart, more than anything, she wanted her Vogue moment to be filled with positivity as this most delicate year draws to a close As always with Beyoncé’s goals, she made her wish come true. well!
