Captain Sir Tom Moore has expressed fears for the elderly if Britain were to be placed in another national lockdown
The 100-year-old WWII veteran told LBC that another lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic would be a ‘disaster’
He explained: « I’m afraid it will be, let’s just say unpleasant, for the elderly It will be very, very difficult because at the moment they are practically imprisoned in their own premises »
Captain Sir Tom was worried about what would happen to those who could not see their friends and family if they were forced to spend so much time alone again
He added: « As we continue with the lockdown, people are going to be more and more isolated, longer and for me it is going to be very, very bad for the elderly [It would be a] very serious situation. for all of us «
The centenary captured the hearts of the nation after walking 100 tours of his garden to raise money for the NHS amid the lockdown, racking up a total of £ 33million
Despite the difficulties of the lockdown and the pandemic, Captain Sir Tom doesn’t like to dwell on the negatives
He explained: « I think the point is you have to look on the bright side, things will get better
« I mean I still am, I’ve been very optimistic and still optimistic, but I’m worried about the elderly
« The elderly have a right to say to look on the bright side because things will get better, and there is no doubt that we can step away from this cloud we are in right now »
He also encouraged young people to help their elderly neighbors and relatives by contacting them for a chat or offering to do their shopping or help with daily chores.
Captain Sir Tom has also started his own podcast to help the elderly, with his daughter Hannah telling Metrocouk: “All the elderly have an incredibly powerful story to tell and that’s what got me thinking that it would be a beautiful thing for my father to do
