Frank McAvennie says Celtic could still sign Scott McKenna despite Scotland defender joining Nottingham Forest yesterday
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the Hoops legend suggested his former club could move the 23-year-old in 12 months
Nottingham Forest confirmed McKenna’s signing yesterday after this site revealed that an initial £ 3million had been agreed with Aberdeen
Neil Lennon’s side have a long-standing interest in the Scotland international and he was on the club’s center-back target list this summer along with Shane Duffy, who completed his move to Parkhead earlier this this month
He graduated from the ranks of Young Dons to establish himself as a regular at Pittodria and made 119 appearances for the first team
Asked by Football Insider why he thought the Hoops missed the center half, McAvennie said: “McKenna looks a lot like Duffy
« I don’t think Aberdeen would have wanted to sell him to Celtic and that’s the problem The problem Celtic have is that other Scottish clubs don’t want to sell their best players to the big two because ‘they exceed them
« I don’t know if this deal was ever going on, McKenna is going to Celtic because I don’t think Aberdeen would have sold him to us
The Glasgow giants may well be in the market for another center-half next summer with Kristoffer Ajer’s future far from certain and Shane Duffy’s one-season loan deal expiring in June 2021
Ajer could even leave before the October 5 deadline despite interest from Premier League and Serie A
Separately, Celtic have been asked to seal two new signings by October 5 after a big update
Scott McKenna, Aberdeen Football Club, Celtic FC, Scottish Premiership, Nottingham Forest FC, Rangers FC, Derek McInnes, Scottish Professional Football League
