« It’s not something I wanted to do – it was a decision I tried to stick to as long as possible, » he said

The move comes as health chiefs warn some services are starting to suffer due to Covid-related pressures

Nightingale Hospitals are non-permanent facilities that were set up across the UK during the first wave of the pandemic

On Wednesday it was announced that more restrictions will be placed on the hospitality industry and schools

« My heart goes out to all these companies which are now going to come under even more pressure and all these people whose lives and plans have been thrown into the air, » he said

The deaths of four other people who tested positive for Covid-19 were reported by the Ministry of Health on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to 602

The department also reported another record high in the number of newly diagnosed cases, with 1,217 people testing positive

NI chief scientific adviser said the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in NI was not due to an increase in testing, but rather « reflected an actual increase in community transmission »

Professor Ian Young, who was alongside Mr. Swann at the Stormont briefing said testing increased by 25% while cases more than doubled

« The average number of positive tests continues to increase and has now exceeded 12% in the past seven days, » he said

« To put this in context, the World Health Organization suggests that anything above 5% reflects an out of control epidemic »

Professor Young said there had been « a sustained and dramatic increase in the average number of cases » recorded each day at the NI – he said the average was currently 950 cases per day

He added the new restrictions « do not represent a lockdown » but were designed to reduce mixing between people to allow a chance of reducing the R number to less than one

R is the number of people to whom an infected person will transmit a virus, on average

« Ideally between 7am and 9am – that’s the goal and we all have a role to play in making it happen,” Prof Young said

Northern Ireland’s chief medical officer told the briefing that the new restrictions that would take effect across NI could « achieve the reset we badly need »

Dr Michael McBride said it would take two to three weeks before the effects of the measures became evident

« The new measures will only work if each of us agrees to strictly follow health advice »

Starting Saturday, people will have to stay indoors from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. in Paris and eight other cities
