World News – GB – Covid-19: This is when Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to announce new restrictions for Derbyshire

Coronavirus in Derbyshire community live blog: PM Johnson to unveil new three-tier local lockdown system

The Prime Minister is expected to impose tighter restrictions on areas such as Derbyshire, which were most affected by the coronavirus today, in a bid to slow the spread of the virus across the country

Areas of the Midlands such as Birmingham have been on the verge of tighter local lockdown restrictions over the past two weeks and with a growing number of cases in Derbyshire, towns like Chesterfield are likely to be affected by new measures

Ministers are reportedly considering similar tough new measures for parts of northern England as virus spreads uncontrollably

Boris Johnson is expected to make an official announcement of new measures in a statement to MPs today (Monday 12 October)

The Prime Minister is due to address representatives around 3.30 a.m., announcing the new three-tier system of ‘local COVID alert levels’ across England

This will come after a COBRA meeting this morning where details of the proposed three-step locking system will be finalized

Around 6 p.m., M Johnson will host a televised press conference alongside Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty and Chancellor Rishi Sunak, to address the audience and answer questions

« This is a critical time and it is absolutely essential that everyone follows the clear guidelines we have set to help contain the virus, » Downing Street said

There are currently no local lockdown restrictions in Chesterfield or Derbyshire, despite the increase in the number of people contracting the virus in the region

In two areas of Chesterfield there were almost 20 new cases of coronavirus last week according to data from Public Health England

The Royal Chesterfield Hospital has announced it has created space for additional beds in case of new Covid-19 patients as part of a ‘precautionary measure’ to prepare for the second wave

In Chesterfield, there have been a total of 796 positive coronavirus cases in the city since the pandemic began in February, with a rate of 7,588 cases per 100,000 population

From September 30 to October 6, 112 new cases of Covid-19 were recorded in the city, an increase of 90 from the previous week

There are 107 positive tests per 100,000 population in Chesterfield, according to the latest data from Public Health England – while England has an average of 74

In order to tackle rising infection rates, the Prime Minister will likely introduce a three tier system for local lockdowns, which would place different parts of England into different categories

Areas that fall under the first level will have less than 100 cases per 100,000 population and will continue to meet national restrictions, such as the ‘rule of six’ and social distancing

Those in level two include areas where cases are greater than 100 per 100,000, with restrictions similar to those currently in place in large parts of northern England, including bans on home meetings

Areas placed at level three would include those with significantly higher infection rates and likely face full lockdown, forcing pubs, cafes and restaurants to close

M Johnson is expected to impose tighter restrictions in parts of the Midlands and northern England, with worst-hit areas facing possible closure of pubs and restaurants

Cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle will most likely see hospitality establishments forced to close, as infection rates in these areas continue to climb

However, a final decision on the time or extent of potential closures has yet to be confirmed
