Ruth Jones is in tears over Who do you think you are tonight? After discovering the tragic fate of his family tree
The Gavin and Stacey star is the latest to delve into his ancestry for the BBC series and discover the depths of his family roots in Wales
And, as you would expect, his grandfather’s side provides plenty of characters, with great-great-great-grandfather David Jenkins having nine children
Finding a photo of the family all together on the beach, Ruth is delighted to hear about this massive new expansion of what she knew – but things quickly get sad when she learns that two of the children are going to die very young
Hannah was only 25 when she died of tuberculosis, with her family singing hymns by her side when she died
And a few months later, Thomas, who had joined the family profession of sailor, drowned at sea while carrying a boat full of coal to Cardiff
Ruth was heartbroken at the discovery, and is later seen gushing out saying to the camera, « It’s horrible isn’t it, the thought of losing two kids anyway, them dying before you die yourself But let them die within a year of each other… ”
« I feel like I’m at a little party with this picture, seeing all these kids together, » Ruth added in the moving moment « All of them having fun and messing around like their siblings do , then in such a short time, two of them are no longer there
« I have some group photos of me, my brother and my sister, where my dad said, ‘Come on, let me take a pic of you four »
« This is the moment and I imagine they are the 1880s version, and the thought of them losing someone, two of whom are leaving, is so sad »
But things weren’t entirely sad for the actress, who discovered a poignant connection between her family and her most famous character Nessa Jenkins, whom she had never realized before
« I realized today that without realizing it, I took Jenkins’ last name from Gavin and Stacey, » she said, bewildered « I’m a Jenkins too !
« I imagine that she [Nessa] would have gotten along really well with Evan, my great-great-great-grandfather, and David, my great-great-grandfather »
« I’m not sure she gets along with Nelly, though, » said Ruth laughing as she spoke of one of the nine siblings.
Slipping into Nessa’s iconic voice adding: « This Nelly, she’s very difficult I’m not going to lie »
