World News – GB – Gregor Townsend hails Finn Russell’s ‘positive impact’ on Scotland’s success

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend praised Finn Russell’s impact after the returning half-butterfly came off the bench in 48-7 win over Georgia

Russell arrived early in the second half with Scotland four tries to one and the Racing 92 player added a spark as the game opened in the later stages

Making his first international appearance in 2020 after fixing his relationship with Townsend following a disciplinary issue before the Guinness Six Nations, Townsend set up a first try for Duhan van der Merwe

Townsend said: « He had a really positive impact on the game, as he did in training this week.

« He played well I thought his death was exceptional He had a couple of really quick passes and we had no luck with one because we got held up over the line but he opened up space in defense and also had some good shots »

Darcy Graham scored an early try before Scotland scored a series of tries ranging from mauls to Fraser Brown (twice), Hamish Watson and Stuart McInally Van der Merwe, Graham again and Kinghorn have added a late shine to the score

Townsend said: “It was definitely a blow to our forwards The ball was slippery and there were mistakes from both teams and we didn’t have a lot of control over our attack but front performance was excellent

Brown was making his first appearance as a captain in his 51st international and was modest about his personal contribution

« There were eight or nine other guys – including full backs – who came to help out there

« It was a really proud moment for me personally, all the more because of the group of guys we have and how they’ve embraced what we’re trying to do over the past couple of weeks, so leading this team was pretty special «
