Late goals from James Scott and Callum Jones resulted in Hull City defeating Harrogate in the Papa John’s Cup

The Tigers created a slew of chances, but it was not until 15 minutes before they finally made the breakthrough as substitute Scott turned around Martin Samuelson’s brilliant cross

Lil captain Callum Jones made sure of victory with five minutes remaining when he won and converted a penalty after Tom Walker turned him upside down

It would have been more than that had it not been for the impressive showing of goalkeeping from former Hull City player Joe Cracknell, who had previously fought off to deny the goalscorers and Tom Ives

The result raised Grant McCann’s men to third place in Group E, heading to their last group match against Grimsby next Tuesday

Grant McCann made 10 changes from the FA Cup win over Fleetwood, with Alfie Jones being the only man to hold his place

The Tigers needed a win to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive and began with a lot of offensive intent

Within two minutes, Hassib Adilakon secured possession from Thomas Meyer and intentionally moved forward before taking a 25-yard shot that bounced off by deflecting

Meyer was heavily involved in early exchanges, meticulously trading with Samuelsen before target firing

The Austrian then released Dan Patti on the right, whose head was Ives a cross.

The visitors had the ball in the net in the 12th minute when Brandon Fleming’s shot deflected through Ives to cleverly finish over Cracknell – but from an offside position

The best chance of the game fell on the former Gillingham striker when he fired a Patty’s diagonal pass through one-on-one but Cracknell was blocked well with his legs

Samuelsen fired from a distance with his header from a corner kick, while Fleming was unable to maintain a 25-yard free kick

A defensive blunder nearly led to the opening goal seven minutes before halftime as Warren Borrell failed to clear Callum Jones’ deep cross, with Adilacon’s stab attempt being saved by Cracknell

Tigers were knocking on Harrogate’s door and came closer as Fleming rode a challenge before drilling a left-foot effort against the foot of the shaft

Another great editorial that started begging when Adilacon raised a wide ball for the first time from Reagan Slater’s accurate research pass

Hull City had a rare moment of anxiety after the first half kick as Harrogate sent the ball to Brandon Kiernan on the edge of the penalty area but shot it away.

Town got off to a great start in the second half but Aaron Martin just couldn’t get enough purchase from his header at close range to really test the visiting guardian keeper Matt Ingram

The deadlock was supposed to be broken five minutes into the second half when Samuelson slipped into the Ives, but, due to his imbalance, the striker fired off the near post

Replace Scott Meyer just before the hour mark, and he should find the score sheet within three minutes

After pouncing on indecision by Kevin Loco, Scott sprints across the middle and tries to bypass Cracknell but the goalkeeper saves at the attacker’s feet.

Cracknell was having an inspiring evening and produced an acrobatic stop to dodge Callum Jones’ 25-yard shot

The home keeper was finally defeated 15 minutes before the end of the match after good work from Samuelsen, who crossed with Scott’s left foot from close range.

Harrogate responded forcefully and could have leveled up when Kiernan fired after a corner kick that had not cleared before John Steed sent a header into Ingram’s arms

But the match was put to bed with five minutes remaining when Tom Walker downed Callum Jones, who confidently stepped forward to send Cracknell the wrong way with the resulting penalty

The Homeowners could have pulled the lead in overtime but Alfie Jones made a good blocker to deny Jake Lawlor and keep the Tigers nets clean
