One of the most iconic racing drivers of his age, Moss was inducted into the Motosport Hall of Fame and active from 1948 to 1962
MOSS rose to fame after WWII and began his piloting career in 1948
His father was an amateur runner and had competed in the Indianapolis 500, although Albert wanted young Stirling to follow in his footsteps and become a dentist
But racing was his passion and Moss quickly demonstrated his abilities with numerous national and international victories
He won a total of 212 of the 529 races he competed in during his 14-year career, with his first Formula 1 triumph at the 1955 British Grand Prix
Leading a clean sweep for Mercedes, Moss’ victory at Aintree was the first GP triumph at home by a British driver
In his F1 career, Moss went on to take 16 checkered flags, while appearing on the podium 24 times
His last foray into Formula 1 was at the 1951 United States Grand Prix, where he was forced to withdraw from the race despite starting 3rd on the grid
And his career as a professional pilot practically ended in 1962 following an accident at Goodwood that put him in a coma
However, he continued to race in historic cars and legendary events for over thirty years
Moss’s wife was at his bedside as he died in the early hours of Easter Sunday from a long illness
Stirling retired from public life in January 2018 after undergoing lengthy rehabilitation for a serious lung infection contracted more than two years earlier

He is survived by Susie – his third wife whom he married in 1980 – and two children
And as the first Briton to win a home Grand Prix, he will always be considered Formula 1 royalty
He never won the award and was subsequently described as the ‘greatest driver to ever win’ the title
