World News – GB – Jones, Gatland and Thomas honored

The Queen's birthday honors Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, former skipper Gareth Thomas and former head coach Warren Gatland

Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, former skipper Gareth Thomas and former head coach Warren Gatland are among the recipients of the Queen’s Birthday Honors

Briton and Irishman Lion Jones, who won a record 138 caps for Wales, becomes OBE for rugby services

Thomas, who also led the Lions, receives top CBE award for services to sport and health

Gatland becomes a CBE for rugby services in Wales after a 12-year reign that resulted in three Grand Slam tournaments

The 57-year-old New Zealander also guided Wales to two Rugby World Cup semi-finals before stepping down in 2019

« This award recognizes everyone involved in Welsh rugby and everything we have accomplished together during my tenure as head coach

« Rugby is an integral part of my life and has given me so much joy as a player, father of a rugby son and also a coach

« It has also given me so many amazing friendships and experiences. I feel very lucky to be able to do something that I love every day, and I want to thank everyone who has supported me during of my career «

The only player to have taken part in Gatland’s three Six Nations Grand Slam tournaments with Wales in 2008, 2012 and 2019 was Jones, considered one of the best second-ranked in the world

The Ospreys player, 35, made his Wales debut in 2006 and remains an inspiring figure for his country after being named a 2019 Six Nations player

Jones also made nine test matches for the Lions over three tours, leading them to victory in the third decisive test against Australia in 2013

« Initially, I was reluctant to receive such an award in these difficult times when there are so many people doing so much good for the community and more worth it, but I see it as recognition to all the people who have helped me throughout my career

« This is recognition for everyone who supported me from basic and intermediate rugby, to professional and international rugby

« It is for my family, those who are no longer there and those who are still there and fully behind me and for all their support in what I have done and what I want to continue doing »

Thomas, who led the Lions on their tour of New Zealand in 2005, is recognized for his work outside of rugby as well as his exploits as a player

The 46-year-old has campaigned for a number of causes since his retirement after a distinguished career which saw him win 100 rugby union caps for Wales, which he also represented in the rugby league

The former Wales and Lions captain revealed in 2019 that he is HIV-positive and opened up about his fear of keeping his status a secret

Thomas finished the Ironman triathlon in Pembrokeshire after making the announcement and was praised by Prince Harry after talking about how his HIV diagnosis inspired him to educate others
