Jordan Flores of Dundalk was nominated for the prestigious Fifa Puskás Award for his goal against Shamrock Rovers in the SSE Airtricity Premier Division last February.
The English midfielder’s bold volley came before the Premier Division was closed due to a suspension from Covid for a 2-3 loss to eventual champions Rovers.
And with the game broadcast live on RTÉ, it quickly became an internet sensation. The video clip received millions of views worldwide, including the game of the day.
Flores said at the time, « It was really a bit surreal to see the clips on different pages on Twitter around the world.
« These are things that I saw growing up, and being pointed at something like this is good. It is good to have this recognition.
« It was just then that the ball was approaching you, locking the ball on your foot, trying to make the best possible connection.
But Flores is facing tough competition for this year’s award, which Daniel Zsóri from Debrecen won last year for this goal.
